Scenery, Birds, Heritage & more

There are lots of walks from cottage in all directions, many are on tracks beside fields or lochs, but all with spectacular views of open countryside.  There are guide books of walks in the cottage and more information can be given if needed.  The coast with its cliffs and bays is only about 4 miles away which gives wonderful variety to any walker.

Orkney has more than its fair share of Neolithic sites, the cottage is only about 6 miles from the UNESCO World Heritage Site, but closer to home in the field adjacent to the cottage is a Prehistoric Burnt Mound, which is a scheduled monument. Also on the farm are two tumuli, Neolithic burial sites, all of which are un-excavated.

The cottage is perfectly located for bird-watching with its patio window which overlooks a field which we have set aside for wildlife, the ground is fairly marshy in areas and there is a small area of water which attracts birds, at the end of the field there is also a river.  Our guest book is full of lists of birds which visitors have spotted from the cottage!  See if you can beat the record number of bird sightings!

Here is a link to a short recording of birdsong from the cottage, copy and paste the link below.

In addition to the birds the fields around are very popular with hares, these can be seen all day but especially in the early morning when they bound through the fields.

If you are a night owl and star gazing is your thing then outside the cottage patio window with the dark skies is a great place to contemplate the vastness of skies and the longer you gaze the more you see!
